LOVE AND DEATH

Nude women and plastic dinosaurs abound in Araki's collection of photographs called Love and Death. Fun fact: calling Araki prolific is an understatement; the 745 photographs in Love and Death represent one in over 400 other books that have been published about Araki.

RADICAL LIGHT

An excellent, comprehensive history of the burgeoning film scene in the Bay Area. It's worth borrowing this book just to read George Kuchar's hilarious tales of movie productions at SFAI.

RYAN TRECARTIN

RYAN TRECARTIN

Video art star Ryan Trecartin has been dear to all our hearts since he busted out of RISD, even if none of us have sat through all four hours of Any Ever. Now you can flip through his book and take your time pondering the monologues that you struggled to follow in his super edited, hyper fast, sensory-assaulting video works.

Or if you haven't already, check out Ryan Trecartin's VIMEO channel.

MAGIC SHOW

Whether you want to know how to market your magician skills or what happens when mystics infiltrate a Russian Cosmonaut training program, this book is sure to tickle your fancy.

VIDEO ART

Kudos to Sylvia Martin for making a short, to-the-point survey of the big leaguers in video art. It's the perfect jumping off point for beginners. Flipping through, I had surprisingly few "why they heck aren't they in there?" moments.

The Philosophy of David Lynch

The next time somebody name drops Nietzsche alongside Lynch at a dinner party, you will be prepared to discuss the absurdity of existence and the parallels between Alvin Straight and Zarathustra until everybody walks away in disgust. Better yet, read about how Lynch’s movies intersect with logic, epistemology, Buddhism, morality and Transcendentalism. Hopefully I'll return it to the library in time for some of you to get an A in Histories of Film.
